When black ice takes you by surprise and gritting is just a distant dream, one slip can be costly. Last winter, one in three Finns slipped, and 43% of them reported injuring themselves in some way. 7% ended up seeking medical attention after their fall. When a fracture or a concussion can take you out of commission for weeks, traction cleats worth a few dozen euros are the cheapest and simplest life insurance on the market. They don't prevent winter from coming, but they help you stay upright through it.

The average person can choose between two different types of traction cleats: a model that goes under the heel and a full-sole model.

The heel cleat, placed under the heel, is suitable for walkers. The hard metal studs under the heel dig into the surface of the ice and prevent slipping. The Devisys heel cleat we sell was developed at the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland's safety engineering laboratory. VTT's research results showed that the most common reason for slipping is the heel sliding when stepping onto a snowy or icy surface.

For a more active person or, for example, a dog walker, a full-sole traction cleat is a better choice. When there are studs under the ball of the foot in addition to the heel, you get traction for running. The studs also help if a dog pulls suddenly. Walking on sea or lake ice is also easier when there is grip during the push-off phase of your step. From us, you will find the DEVISYS -Blue Ice full-sole traction cleat.

In addition to traction cleats, it's good to remember a few other tips for staying upright:

Check the pedestrian weather forecast.
Choose footwear according to the conditions.
Use traction cleats.
Allow extra time for travel.
Focus on walking.
Give feedback on maintenance (or: "Give feedback to maintenance crews").
Take care of your physical condition and alertness.
